Dyme Def - Red Rum MP3

D. Black - The Return MP3

Seattle emcee D. Black returns with the track "The Return" from his forthcoming album, Ali'Yah. Produced by the renowned Jake One, "The Return" is a proclamation of a track, announcing the impending, D. Black-assisted return of real hip-hop. D. Black also believes "The Return" is a more complex challenge, "There's a lot of boasting and glorifying negativity in rap these days. I kind of wanted to boast the positive things, the "sport" that life has to offer. I think that even in a song like 'The Return', where I challenge others to reassess their rap content, it also challenges the listener to think about the trashy music they're listening to. The goal is to make it hurt you deep if your on the wrong side of the sword." A hybrid of hip-hop styles backs up D. Black's argument, as Jake One mixes a ?uestlove-like ultra-laid back drumbeat, large string sections, fine guitar licks, and a little Jay-Z sample for added flavor. Be sure to check out "The Return" and the rest of Ali'Yah when it drops September 15th on Sportn' Life Records/MYX Music Label.

Lampin in the tub as I type this and listening to the appropriately named mix by dj blesOne. Do yourself a favor and chill out to the 'Hottest Day in Seattle Since 1891'

They Live! Listed in "The Four Best Seattle Bands You Don't Know"

Spin lists They Live! as one of four bands in Seattle that you may not know, but should! Click here to read who else made the cut! spotted on 206Proof

There can never be too much weed rap, and They Live! does bouncy, blunted hip-hop with a love that can't be faked. Backed by head-spinning members of the Mash Hall b-boy crew, MCs Dro Boy and Bruce Illest blew up the indoor Neumo's stage on Friday night with tracks like "Weed Murder" and "(It's) My Weed," but the place really erupted when Dro Boy dropped verses over Illest's remix of the Dirty Projectors' "Stillness is the Move."

They have won a number of prestigious titles including B-boy Summit 2000 and the World B-boy Championships at Wembley Arena in London, England. The Monkees are actively involved in their community, working at local centers with children, coaching child sports and teaching b-boy classes. They even have their own holiday, as April 26th was dubbed Seattles official Massive Monkees Day in 2004. With this much talent and personality, they could be next in the line of b-boy crews to walk away with the $100,000 prize.

Duck Down Signs to Blue Scholars

That's right, you didn't read that wrong, Blue Scholars didn't sign to Duck Down, but the other way around. Below is the "press release" and you can click here to read Geo's (Prometheus Brown) two cents on the situation at the Blue Scholars blog. 206 up!

SEATTLE - Walking away from numerous record label offers, Blue Scholars will release several upcoming projects through a unique partnership formed with Duck Down Records, and Seattle's Caffe Vita Coffee Co.

On August 25, 2009 Blue Scholars will release "OOF!" their newest collaborative multi-media project and the first release to be distributed through their new venture. On September 1st, they will re-issue their 2007 album "Bayani", which has already sold over 20,000 units. Bayani Redux will include one brand new track and two songs that were previously available only via digital retail outlets. There will also be a brand new full-length Blue Scholars album and other projects coming soon.

The sales and distribution model developed by the group for their upcoming releases will allow them to maintain complete ownership of their music and total control over how it is marketed, sold, and even given away.

Instead of signing a standard artist/record label deal, Blue Scholars hired the label Duck Down to run point on marketing for all of their upcoming releases. As a major player in the current and ever-changing record label industry, Duck Down Records saw this deal as an opportunity to get creative and experiment with strategies for record labels to continue evolving as viable businesses.

Dru Ha, CEO of Duck Down Records states, "I believe Blue Scholars is positioned to be one of the next important groups, not just in hip hop, but in music worldwide, and I want Duck Down to be a part of that. They bring their progressive ideas not just to their music and lyrics, but also in the way they think about and do their business."

Duck Down's current distribution partner, E1 Entertainment, the largest independent distributor in the United States, will handle distribution of Blue Scholars' physical product. Digital sales and distribution will go through Tunecore. Direct-to-fan marketing and sales will be developed by the members of Blue Scholars themselves, using Topspin web marketing tools.

Says Geo, of Blue Scholars, "After weighing all the options, remaining independent is without question, the best look. Duck Down shares that vision and their track record speaks for itself. With them, we get that national and international push while still owning and controlling our music. "

To finance all the upcoming projects, Blue Scholars have formed a strategic brand relationship with Seattle independent coffee company, Caffe Vita. The coffee company will also play a role in the sales and distribution plan by selling upcoming albums in all of their retail outlets and marketing the releases via their online presence.

Blue Scholars DJ/ Producer Sabzi says in regard to their partnership with Caffe Vita - "their innovative marketing, their justice and equity in business practices, and their premiere quality of product and presentation, make Caffe Vita an ideal brand to partner with. I intend to do with our music what Vita does with their coffee."

"Coffee is both International and local, it effects the lives of millions, and it has tremendous ability to generate culture. We believe strongly in the work of the Blue Scholars and their power to look beyond the basic commodity that music has become. We are honored that Sabzi and Geo see that Vita is striving for the same goals."Mike McConnell, founder Caffe Vita

Blue Scholars have sold over 60,000 albums and played over 400 live shows. They have developed a dedicated following in the Northwest (selling over 4,000 tickets for
each of their last few Seattle performances) and have shared the stage with an impressive list of nationally acclaimed artists such as Kanye West, Q-Tip, De La Soul, Immortal Technique, Hieroglyphics, GZA of Wu-Tang Clan, Matisyahu, Zion-I, Flobots and the Coup.

via duckdown
In celebration of Seattle's new 14-mile light rail system, which 92,000 passengers tried out for fun on its inaugural weekend, Sabzi of Blue Scholars, rode the environmentally friendly means of transportation to announce the recent deal in which Duck Down Records signs to Blue Scholars to market their upcoming OOF! EP available at all digital retail outlets on August 25th. Fans can enjoy a sample of the instrumental named "POSTAL" playing in the background, which will be available as part of the 5 song/5 instrumental OFF! EP project.

Tha Bizness Connect with JimmyJazz

JimmyJazz sit down with Dow Jones and Henny (J-Hen) of Tha Bizness. Below is an excerpt of the interview. Click here to read the whole enchilada. You guys are from Seattle, home of grunge music. It’s also known for being a rainy state and has the highest suicide rate in the country. Where did you guys get your inspiration?

Henny (Tha Bizness): Coming from Seattle is crazy. We only got Top 40 radio, We didn’t have a lot of underground stations, we didn’t have a lot of the music from the Bay area that would trickle down to Seattle. We only had BET for half a day, from like 5pm to midnight, it wasn’t even everyday. So the types of things we are influence by a lot of it had to do with just commercialism that stuck with us.

Dow Jones (Tha Bizness): Like Henny was just saying, it was just so limited. The only real rap show we had was Rap Attack, every Sunday. You’ll get 3 hours of just raw music. But that was just a small college station at the time, so it wasn’t something that was super overly advertised, it was almost in a way pirate radio that Nasty Nes was doing when he was getting everything going with Sir Mix A Lot. Our main thing, like Henny was touching on, music is life and life is music so all the places that we been, whether it be up and down the west coast, from Seattle to San Diego, to Henny being in college in Atlanta, we’ve been able to be around and see a brighter spectrum of things. You can listen to Atlanta music, but when you go there and really get to see how the 808’s are and how everything is, it gives you a different perspective. Like a lot of times [short pause] we’ll meet southern producers that grew up on west coast beats, but it just doesn’t have that sound. There’s just a certain authenticity to each region, that unless your there and be able to live it and observe it, it will be close, but it won’t be the same. That’s just our whole palate; we’re open to new things. It’s ok to be different and try new shit. You may not like everything, but that perspective of being able to see life through somebody else’s eyes can let you look at something somewhere. We got the whole Ying & Yang personality; we may look at the same thing two different ways, even though we’re working on the same project. But it’s that difference that can open up a conversation, to open up new ideas or being able to see it from a different side. At the end of the day it makes what we do better. The more options that are out there, the more you get, the better answers you can give back out.

DJ B-Mello Makes Some New Moves

Not only is the move big, but it's national! Many may have wondered why you didn't hear B-Mello's familiar voice on last night's KEXP Street Sounds and it's because the original West Coast Tapemaster is now on board with the new Death Row Records. Early indications of this were announced through a tweet that said, "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT coming this week involving a new consulting gig and position in the game! Time to Work! Press Release coming!" Followed by saying, "Shout out to @Lar206 Passing the Streetsounds baton!! New Era starting 2day. Good luck!" Congratulations are in order to both B-Mello on the new position he plays with Death Row and to Larry Mizell Jr in starting a new chapter of KEXP Street Sounds. 206 up!

Check the press release below.

Seattle, WA, USA

Since its inception, DJ B-Mello has been a mainstay of the KEXP urban music community. Known best for supporting independent artists, getting them heard on the radio and keeping a close ear to the underground scene, DJ B-Mello is making some changes in his career.

“KEXP has been an amazing experience for me and it will always be a huge part of who I am as a DJ and what I stand for in terms of discovery of new music and the support of developing talent. Change is good, I’m looking forward to what’s coming next.

DJ B-Mello known well for developing the highly influential radio show Street Sounds for KEXP since the day the station opened, is leaving KEXP to pursue more national music industry career moves.

B-Mello will always maintain his roots in the Northwest and fans can continue to hear him on air Monday thru Friday on the Mixtape at 8 and Traffic Jam both top rated radio shows on KUBE 93 FM.

But new opportunity has come to B-Mello who is now scheduled to consult for the new Death Row Records - aka Wideawake Death Row Entertainment working Death Row product in North America including working with radio programmers, clubs, DJ’s, special remix contests and initiatives.

“Given my long history living in the Northwest before becoming the CEO of WIDEawake Entertainment Group, I am really happy to create an opportunity for B-Mello and work closely with him to help bring new life into Death Row. I think having someone who really understands the national and international club scene and how Death Row can play in is a huge a plus for our company.”

B-Mello won best West Coast DJ of the Year in 2006 and has not stopped. He still maintains his on air presence as well as being a sought after club and party DJ.
