Russ Pope Gallery Event

Russ Pope to art show at evo's Times Infinity Gallery Space. Click on the flyer above to read more info.[evo Seattle]
Yo yo yo!
Sunday night is “the night” this month to come check out some rad art, drink some beers, and hang out with the evo crew. Russ’s paintings are a collision of motion and color. In Orange County, his favorite part of life is being outside with his family and spending late, lonely nights in his dirty, junk-filled studio painting to new wave, old punk , and even older blues and jazz. Art keeps Russ sane while juggling work in the skateboard industry, an overly active family, and gallery show deadlines. His inspiration comes from music, books, everyday people, architecture and his childrens’ artwork. Their art reminds him to create without concern for outside opinion or gallery walls.
Russ has shown his work both domestically and internationally in: San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, San Jose, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, New York, Brooklyn, Miami, Austin, Washington DC, Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, Vancouver, Whistler, Hawaii, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, and Japan.
See you on Sunday, ya heard?!

REV RUN: Words of Wisdom - Thursday, January 31st, 2008

On being happy
Good morning. What strange perversity is it that induces a man to set his heart on doing those things which he has not succeeded in, and makes him slight those in which his achievement has been respectable. (Remember) He is not rich that possesses much, but he that is content with what he has!

Allentown, PA Hardest Charged With Homicide

I found this image of some cat on the right funny in two ways. One is them lions on the feet. The second being a Jay Barz look-a-like in Allentown, PA. See the resemblance? Though I don't think dude in the cuffs can rap as good. Click here for the full news article and click here to learn more about Tactown's own, Jay Barz. h/t SDSUTorres was driving on Turner Street Friday afternoon when he was pulled over by police and arrested. He was wearing a hooded sweartshirt with a skull-head pattern on it, pajama bottoms and fuzzy lion-faced slippers at the time. He was still wearing the get-up when he was arraigned after midnight at Lehigh County prison.

D. Black on Seattlest

Click here for the full interview.
Who are you excited about in local hiphop these days?
All of it is pretty exciting, I think. I believe it's appropriate to say Blue Scholars have been putting in a lot of work; its been a great experience watching what moves they make. But there’s so much going on this year, a new Grynch album (which is amazing, BTW), the Cancer Rising EP, Tobacco Road (Common Market’s latest), Sharp Skills' new record and plenty more to look forward to. I’m excited for what this year will bring all together.

Jake One on Built From Skratch

Click here for more.Jake One’s serene home studio is lined with shelves full of vinyl from his amazing collection. Although he had been collecting for many years, he got serious about crate digging in 1995 when Seattle icon Mr. Supreme put him on to the technique of it. “I think I have somewhere over 5000 now,” says Jake, “I stopped counting a while ago. It’s definitely an addiction - I’m trying to have EVERY record, period.”

Paid Dues Lineup Announced

Peep the press release below. Click here for more info on the Paid Dues festival website.
MURS IN ASSOCIATION WITH GUERILLA UNION PRESENT
3RD ANNUAL “PAID DUES” INDEPENDENT HIP-HOP FESTIVAL
POWERED BY SANDISK
SATURDAY, MARCH 22 AT THE NOS EVENTS CENTER IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA
WITH SAGE FRANCIS, LITTLE BROTHER, JEDI MIND TRICKS, LIVING LEGENDS, HEIROGLYPHICS AND MORE
Following the success of the second annual PAID DUES festival in Southern California and national tour last summer, promoters MURS in association with Guerilla Union (Rock The Bells, Cypress Hill Smoke Out) have announced the event will return to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, CA on Saturday, March 22. Tickets for Paid Dues, powered by SanDisk, go on sale Saturday, January 26.
Rolling into its third year, PAID DUES supports a fan base of a vibrant scene of underground hip-hop artists all on one platform. Its tradition of showcasing the best in independent rap continues with its 2008 line-up of SAGE FRANCIS, LITTLE BROTHER, JEDI MIND TRICKS, DILATED PEOPLES, LIVING LEGENDS, HIEROGLYPHICS, VISIONARIES, BOOT CAMP CLIK with BLACK MOON, KOOL KEITH, POS, A-TEAM, MAC LETHAL, FATLIP & OMNI, YAK BALLZ, B. DOLAN and ISAIAH with MURS to host, plus a special surprise guest appearance.
“What we’re trying to do with Paid Dues as we go into our third year is: Number one is focus. Being that it's a festival birthed on the west coast we wanted to tailor the bill to appeal a little more to the region so we brought on local staples such as the A-team, Omni and Fatlip. To knock it out of the park we added the three major west coast crews Living Legends, Hieroglyphics and the Visionaries,” states Murs.
He adds, “The second thing we are doing is expanding by grabbing more artists outside of the traditional indie hop family (ie Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Living Legends) so we approached Dilated Peoples and Little Brother. We also wanted to show some love to the decorated veterans of the independent hiphop scene so we reached out to Boot Camp Clik and Kool Keith. Third and most importantly we wanted to give back to the awesome fans who've supported us over the past two years to make the is the biggest and best Paid Dues yet. My partner Chang says third year is always the greatest and it seems to be like he's going to be right, again.”
"We are very proud to have partnered with Murs to build a true platform for independent hip-hop artists and their communities. The third annual episode combines the best and brightest artists from a myriad of labels, most of whom have new music or projects that can take advantage of our Paid Dues promotional platform,” adds Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union. “The Living Legends, Boot Camp Clik, Hieroglyphics and Murs all have special projects they will be showcasing for 2008. Sage Francis is working on his Strange and Famous label initiatives and I can't wait to see Kool Keith and Yak Ballz! We are especially excited that SanDisk has partnered with Paid Dues to continue their efforts to educate and empower conscious music fans by encouraging our DIY audience to capture, share and distribute content by ‘Waking Up Your Phone.’ It is a very strategic partnership that will help shape the distribution of content that all these artists are capable of producing and sharing with their communities via mobile, on-line and social networking. As always, I'm sure Murs has a couple surprises up his sleeve. Murs for President in 2008. I think he could give the current candidates a run for their money--lyrically speaking at least."
PAID DUES--called “A conscious hip-hop love-in…” by Flavorpill--supports this genre of music largely shunned by the mainstream media. Here, advanced lyricism, stinging political commentary and quality DJ performances flourish in a seemingly parallel universe. In 2006 the first PAID DUES festival, with a line-up featuring Felt, Aesop Rock, Living Legends, El-P, Hangar 18 and more, sold out with over 5,000 concert goers packing the Shrine Expo Center in Los Angeles. The following year MURS and Guerilla Union, along with performers Felt, Living Legends, Sage Francis, Brother Ali and others--teamed up again for the PAID DUES festival tour for over ten dates across the country.
PAID DUES is an all-ages show. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
PAID DUES is an all-ages show.
