Russ Pope Gallery Event

Russ Pope to art show at evo's Times Infinity Gallery Space. Click on the flyer above to read more info.

[evo Seattle]

Yo yo yo!

Sunday night is “the night” this month to come check out some rad art, drink some beers, and hang out with the evo crew. Russ’s paintings are a collision of motion and color. In Orange County, his favorite part of life is being outside with his family and spending late, lonely nights in his dirty, junk-filled studio painting to new wave, old punk , and even older blues and jazz. Art keeps Russ sane while juggling work in the skateboard industry, an overly active family, and gallery show deadlines. His inspiration comes from music, books, everyday people, architecture and his childrens’ artwork. Their art reminds him to create without concern for outside opinion or gallery walls.

Russ has shown his work both domestically and internationally in: San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, San Jose, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, New York, Brooklyn, Miami, Austin, Washington DC, Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, Vancouver, Whistler, Hawaii, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, and Japan.

See you on Sunday, ya heard?!

Good morning. What strange perversity is it that induces a man to set his heart on doing those things which he has not succeeded in, and makes him slight those in which his achievement has been respectable. (Remember) He is not rich that possesses much, but he that is content with what he has!

He was wearing a hooded sweartshirt with a skull-head pattern on it, pajama bottoms and fuzzy lion-faced slippers at the time. He was still wearing the get-up when he was arraigned after midnight at Lehigh County prison.

Who are you excited about in local hiphop these days?

All of it is pretty exciting, I think. I believe it's appropriate to say Blue Scholars have been putting in a lot of work; its been a great experience watching what moves they make. But there’s so much going on this year, a new Grynch album (which is amazing, BTW), the Cancer Rising EP, Tobacco Road (Common Market’s latest), Sharp Skills' new record and plenty more to look forward to. I’m excited for what this year will bring all together.

Paid Dues Lineup Announced

Peep the press release below. Click here for more info on the Paid Dues festival website.

MURS IN ASSOCIATION WITH GUERILLA UNION PRESENT
3RD ANNUAL “PAID DUES” INDEPENDENT HIP-HOP FESTIVAL
POWERED BY SANDISK

SATURDAY, MARCH 22 AT THE NOS EVENTS CENTER IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA

WITH SAGE FRANCIS, LITTLE BROTHER, JEDI MIND TRICKS, LIVING LEGENDS, HEIROGLYPHICS AND MORE

Following the success of the second annual PAID DUES festival in Southern California and national tour last summer, promoters MURS in association with Guerilla Union (Rock The Bells, Cypress Hill Smoke Out) have announced the event will return to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, CA on Saturday, March 22. Tickets for Paid Dues, powered by SanDisk, go on sale Saturday, January 26.

Rolling into its third year, PAID DUES supports a fan base of a vibrant scene of underground hip-hop artists all on one platform. Its tradition of showcasing the best in independent rap continues with its 2008 line-up of SAGE FRANCIS, LITTLE BROTHER, JEDI MIND TRICKS, DILATED PEOPLES, LIVING LEGENDS, HIEROGLYPHICS, VISIONARIES, BOOT CAMP CLIK with BLACK MOON, KOOL KEITH, POS, A-TEAM, MAC LETHAL, FATLIP & OMNI, YAK BALLZ, B. DOLAN and ISAIAH with MURS to host, plus a special surprise guest appearance.

“What we’re trying to do with Paid Dues as we go into our third year is: Number one is focus. Being that it's a festival birthed on the west coast we wanted to tailor the bill to appeal a little more to the region so we brought on local staples such as the A-team, Omni and Fatlip. To knock it out of the park we added the three major west coast crews Living Legends, Hieroglyphics and the Visionaries,” states Murs.

He adds, “The second thing we are doing is expanding by grabbing more artists outside of the traditional indie hop family (ie Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Living Legends) so we approached Dilated Peoples and Little Brother. We also wanted to show some love to the decorated veterans of the independent hiphop scene so we reached out to Boot Camp Clik and Kool Keith. Third and most importantly we wanted to give back to the awesome fans who've supported us over the past two years to make the is the biggest and best Paid Dues yet. My partner Chang says third year is always the greatest and it seems to be like he's going to be right, again.”

"We are very proud to have partnered with Murs to build a true platform for independent hip-hop artists and their communities. The third annual episode combines the best and brightest artists from a myriad of labels, most of whom have new music or projects that can take advantage of our Paid Dues promotional platform,” adds Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union. “The Living Legends, Boot Camp Clik, Hieroglyphics and Murs all have special projects they will be showcasing for 2008. Sage Francis is working on his Strange and Famous label initiatives and I can't wait to see Kool Keith and Yak Ballz! We are especially excited that SanDisk has partnered with Paid Dues to continue their efforts to educate and empower conscious music fans by encouraging our DIY audience to capture, share and distribute content by ‘Waking Up Your Phone.’ It is a very strategic partnership that will help shape the distribution of content that all these artists are capable of producing and sharing with their communities via mobile, on-line and social networking. As always, I'm sure Murs has a couple surprises up his sleeve. Murs for President in 2008. I think he could give the current candidates a run for their money--lyrically speaking at least."

PAID DUES--called “A conscious hip-hop love-in…” by Flavorpill--supports this genre of music largely shunned by the mainstream media. Here, advanced lyricism, stinging political commentary and quality DJ performances flourish in a seemingly parallel universe. In 2006 the first PAID DUES festival, with a line-up featuring Felt, Aesop Rock, Living Legends, El-P, Hangar 18 and more, sold out with over 5,000 concert goers packing the Shrine Expo Center in Los Angeles. The following year MURS and Guerilla Union, along with performers Felt, Living Legends, Sage Francis, Brother Ali and others--teamed up again for the PAID DUES festival tour for over ten dates across the country.
PAID DUES is an all-ages show. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

PAID DUES is an all-ages show.
$35 pre-sale tickets will be available through www.guerillaunion.com on Thursday, January 24
and through www.myspace.com/paidduesfestival on Friday, January 25.
After, tickets will be available for $40 via Ticketmaster online and at all locations.

Torae - Click f/ Skyzoo

Lead off single from Torae's album, Daily Conversation, is produced by DJ Premier called Click. Click here to download and listen. The album drops on January 29th via Soulspazm/Fat Beats. Peep the press release for further details.

TORAE TO RELEASE DEBUT LP, DAILY CONVERSATION, ON 1-29-08

DEBUT FULL-LENGTH EFFORT FEATURES PRODUCTION FROM DJ PREMIER, 9TH WONDER, BLACK MILK, MARCO POLO AND KHRYSIS

TORAE was up four hours before you this morning. By the second time you hit snooze on any given day he could be in the booth recording your new favorite song, penning his next feature on a hot compilation or on his way to your town to give you the show you’ve been waiting for tonight. Anything is possible, which explains how he’s performed before 20,000 people at a sold-out Nassau Coliseum and hit the stage with the likes of The Clipse, Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones and countless others all before signing a major recording contract.

This self proclaimed “new breed of the raw” gained his first exposure after submitting a demo tape to Bad Boy Records in the late 90's. Impressed with the demo, one of the label's executives featured TORAE on a compilation album released through an independent company. Soon after

TORAE was invited to join The Ruff Ryders and Cash Money Millionaires on their nationwide tour. The buzz circulated throughout the music industry’s elite, and while on the set of Cam’ron’s music video for “My Hood” TORAE had the opportunity to show Cam and his friends just how vivid he could spit. He became
a part of the Diplomat family, and although not signed to their label, remained close to Cam'ron, and the Dipset. TORAE went on to record and release a 12" single "Gimme The Mic" b/w "Spice Thang" on his own Internal Affairs Entertainment imprint and in May 2006 TORAE released the single "Promises" b/w "T.I.M.E." on AV8 Records as a member of the underground hip-hop super group The Co. {Coalescence}. The single remains in heavy rotation on underground radio shows, Music Choice and satellite radio stations. Likewise, the track was featured on “The Justo Tribute” mixtape hosted by Pete Rock, and only three months after its release, nominated for two Underground Music Awards (Best Rap Group & Song of the Year).

After previously working with platinum & gold selling producers; such as DJ Clark Kent, Jimi Kendricks, Illmind and DJ Babu, on 1-29-08 TORAE will release his debut LP, Daily Conversation, which features production from DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Black Milk, Khrysis, Marco Polo and guest appearances from
Tash (Tha Alkaholiks), Stimuli, Teflon and fellow rising stars Chaundon and Skyzoo. TORAE’s DJ Premier produced lead-single, “Get It Done,” f/Skyzoo is already ringing in the new year on xxlmag.com’s banger section.

In addition to his solo and group endeavors you’ll be hearing TORAE’s voice on Rawkus Records’ Soundbombing 4, the eMC Project (Masta Ace, Wordsworth, Punchline & Strick), and DJ Babu’s new Duck Season this year; just to name a few.

Tracklisting and credits for Torae’s Daily Conversation:

Chukundi "Kun Luv" Salisbury as Keynote Speaker for Cleveland High MLK Celebration

Chukundi "DJ KUN LUV" Salisbury to be Keynote Speaker for Cleveland High School's Martin Luther King Celebration.

Annual event takes on more meaning with recent death of former student and increased tensions.

Seattle, WA, January 14th, 2008: Popular Local DJ and Multi-Media publisher, Chukundi "DJ KUN LUV" Salisbury, has agreed to deliver the address for the Cleveland High School Martin Luther King Celebration Assembly on Friday, January 18th, 2008. The Assembly which will be held in the schools renovated auditorium will begin at 9:20 AM.

Salisbury, known to many youth in the community through his popular website Seaspot.com and/or through his work as a mobile and nightclub Disc Jockey, will be speaking to the student body regarding alternatives to a violent lifestyle. "As a successful "Urban" entrepreneur, Salisbury is perfect to reach out to our young people!" said Wayne Floyd, Cleveland High School Principal. "His self-made "legal-hustle" is exactly what many of our young people aspire to and more importantly have respect for."

Salisbury's Seaspot Media Group (www.seaspotmediagro up.com), in addition to Marketing, Publicity, Event Marketing, Promotions, and Consulting, the company also publishes 2 print magazines and several web portals. Current properties include: http://www.Seaspot. com , http://www.Urbevent s.com , http://www.Jumpoffm agazine.com , Seaspot Magazine & Jump Off Magazine. SMG Clients include Vulcan, Island Def Jam, Universal, Nintendo, Lavazza, Bon-Macy's, AT&T, Motorola, Mecca Clothing, House of Blues, AEG Live, Seattle Seahawks, Bembry Consulting Services, Seattle Sonics, and more. Motorola & AT&T tapped SMG for lifestyle and event marketing for the very popular Razr phone in 2005. SMG has been featured in several publications including the South District Journal, Musica, and the Puget Sound Business Journal.

After carrying records for a DJ friend in college, Salisbury caught the DJ bug and became DJ KUN LUV
(http://www. kunluv.com ). After spinning his way thru college in North Carolina, he returned to Seattle. Over the years he has become an icon in the northwest music scene and won DJ of the Year. Strictly a club and mixtape DJ, Salisbury has amassed thousands of fans. He has Provided music at shows for likes of Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Harvey, Ludacris, New York Knick Star Jamal Crawford, Ja Rule, The National Brotherhood of Skiers, former Seattle Sonics Rashaard Lewis and Nate McMillan. Salisbury's birthday party, THE VIRGO PARTY, has evolved to the premiere event in Seattle and has been held at prestigious venues such as Qwest Field and McCaw Hall. DJ Icons such as Tony Touch and the World famous Kid Capri have performed at the event. Although based in Seattle, he travels across the country to DJ at events and has been as far as Sydney, Australia to perform at the Fox Studios and Shanghai, China.

His appearance at Cleveland is part of the ongoing partnership between Seaspot Media Group and the Family Empowerment Institute (FEI). FEI has been working on the Cleveland HS campus for some time engaged in outreach and violence prevention as part of the Silent War Project (http://www.silentwa r.org).

Seattle community activist Rev. Harriett Walden founded the Silent War Campaign. Rev. Walden, an ordained minister and National Director of FEI founded the organization after a string of murders in greater Seattle that were met with 'silence' from the community in 1999.

"It is not normal to kill people and somewhere in our North American development we have experienced violence as a normal act," said Rev. Walden. "A lot of people who have experienced violence have not been counseled and everyone knows someone who has experienced violence. Our goal with Seaspot is to establish an intergenerational community relationship. Seaspot has access to the youth and the youth pay attention to Seaspot - we need each other to highlight and address the violence in our communities. "

Salisbury lives in Rainer Valley with his wife and two children. After graduating from Garfield High School, Salisbury attended the same HBCU as his father; Elizabeth City State University where he earned a BS in Computer Science.
